“Terry Nation” by Brief Candles
Background:
The second video for the second track off Brief Candle’ Newhouse EP went in a radically different direction than the video for Olympic Sleeper. If the first video was minimalist, this was very maximalist. A steady blast of clips from Eisenhower era educational films and advertisements assault the sense as much as they attack one another. Images of leisure and frivolity slam against each other to expose a tension and violence that underlies a mid-century lifestyle of avarice and escapism. When the band explained the origin of the stack, singer and guitarist, Kevin Dixon, told me that the song was written about baby boomers and their self-mythicizing belief that they have created a middle-class utopia, while failing to see that their self-indulgent way of life leaves future generations in debt and despair. In this video a war is being waged not only between generations, but it is being waged between the film clips themselves.
